In this dissertation, corpus data is applied in various kinds of linguistic analyses. The data serves as a source of examples and counterexamples in a theoretical linguistic analysis of the Dutch cleft construction, as the source of quantitative data in a probabilistic account of the dative alternations, as the database from which to extract a repository of syntactically marked prepositional phrases and as training material for the automatic classification of nouns as countable or uncountable. It is thus shown that corpus data, and in particular corpus data that is automatically annotated with syntactic information, is a very useful resource for syntactic research.
